To All Members and Practitioners of Gendai Reiki
As autumn deepens and news of snowfall is reported in various regions, I would like to inform all those involved with Gendai Reiki regarding the official designation of our practice.
The name “Gendai Reiki Ho” and its abbreviation “Gendai Reiki” were registered as trademarks in 2006, and I have personally owned the trademark rights since that time. Trademark rights are a type of intellectual property, serving to protect names and logos and to distinguish goods and services from others. They play an important role in maintaining the credibility of the brand and protecting the interests of users and practitioners.
The reason for registering this name as a trademark traces back to an incident that occurred when I was invited abroad to conduct the workshop “The Philosophy of Usui-sensei and the Truth of Traditional Japanese Reiki.” At that time, a group from another lineage applied for trademark registration with the intention of obstructing the dissemination of Gendai Reiki. Although the application was blocked through an opposition, this experience made me strongly aware of the necessity to formally register the trademark in Japan, which I did and have held since.
Today, under the name “Gendai Reiki Ho (Gendai Reiki),” many practitioners are active both in Japan and abroad, and its spread has become significant. Maintaining the trademark rights is essential to protecting these activities and supporting their proper development into the future. However, as I have now reached ninety years old, I have determined that it is no longer appropriate for me to continue holding the rights personally. The trademark must be renewed every ten years, and next year marks the second renewal period—another reason for deciding to transfer the rights.
I considered it appropriate that the successor should not be an individual but an organization capable of handling it, and therefore consulted with the Nonprofit Organization Gendai Reiki Network (GRN). GRN has a proven track record, having previously been entrusted with the production and distribution rights for overseas manuals. Currently, based on the official Japanese manuals, they carry out translations into major foreign languages, establish authorized distributors in each country, and reliably provide materials to overseas Gendai Reiki Masters. Moreover, they are very active in international exchange and are a widely trusted NPO organization both in Japan and abroad. Considering this record and their operational system, I decided to transfer the trademark rights to GRN, and the process has already been completed.
Please note that the trademark rights are not intended to restrict the activities of Gendai Reiki practitioners. Rather, they exist to protect the name from malicious use and to preserve the healthy and free development of Gendai Reiki.
I sincerely hope that this will create an environment in which all practitioners can continue their activities safely into the future.
Thank you so much for your continued support.
